It's funny how food brings back memories. From time to time, it's nice to have some French bread, lightly toasted, with butter and garlic salt. I never slice the bread the way a loaf of bread is normally sliced. Instead I cut a few inches off the loaf and then slice that piece in two length-wise -- so each slice has a crust side.
The method, and the memory, comes from French bread sold during "brunch" at my junior high school. For ten cents you could get two small slices that were mighty tasty -- especially if you skipped breakfast.
