Field trip: Spenceville Wildlife Area

Spenceville Wildlife and Recreation Area, east of Marysville, is more than 11 thousand acres of boulder-studded rolling hills, foothill oaks and lazy creeks.
My destination was the pair of waterfalls known collectively as Shingle Falls (or Fairy Falls). While both falls were scenic, the shape and geology of the creek prohibits getting close to the water, the way I like to. I saw many small birds and a few hawks, but not as many other forms of wildlife as I expected, considering the mild temperature of the day. I did see several dozen head of cattle, as parts of Spenceville are used for grazing.
Spenceville is an old mining area, which explains piles of boulders and many fenced areas with large signs saying Keep Out.
