Read this: Nature Noir
In his autobiography, former park ranger Jordan Fisher Smith chronicles his work trying to protect the nature of, and the people in, the Auburn State Recreation Area, while dealing with the political realities of government work. If you like the outdoors and/or you like crime stories, you'll have trouble putting this book down. Fisher Smith talks about the frustration of trying to make people care about land that, it seemed, would one day be buried under hundreds of feet of water behind the proposed Auburn Dam.
