I like the action in this class action

As you may know, I dislike telemarketing. Nothing personal against the people who have that job, I just disagree with the concept of calling me, on a telephone which I am paying for, to try to get me to buy things that I don't need or want. I am also a big fan of a person's right to privacy.

But when I heard about a class action lawsuit against Herbalife, for illegally telemarketing several years ago, I wanted to join in. I had been a victim of its telemarketing during the time span covered.

A class action lawsuit is when a group of plaintiffs join together to sue a defendant. It takes the place of multiple lawsuits and frequently results in an out of court settlement. However, many class action lawsuits only serve to make money for the attorneys. The people harmed usually wind up with very little. Sometimes they just get a coupon for discounts on a future purchase.

Given that background I was skeptical about participating. But since it was a violation of a law that I particularly like, I felt I should sign on. I didn't have many hopes of getting much more than a few cents. But at least there might be some small measure of civil justice.

I had completely forgotten about this lawsuit until yesterday. That's when a legal-looking envelope arrived in my mail, with a check inside for my share of the settlement: $77.45.

I am sure the attorneys made much more but at least Herbalife was held accountable for its actions. And getting a check in the mail is always a nice thing.
