It's just one of many American classics that I never had to read in school. I'm sure that if it was an assignment I would not have enjoyed it as much.
It's nice to finally "get" all of the pop culture references to Tom, Huck and Becky. And I can't help but think of Tom Sawyer's Island at Disneyland. My only caution is that some of the narration and dialog requires rereading, given the dialects and words/phrases used in that time period.
I am currently reading Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, which could be considered a sequel but with a slightly different character. Similar location and very similar adventures.
I have previously read another of Mark Twain's famous stories, the Jumping Frog of Calaveras County. Given my appreciation of the Gold Rush era, I really enjoyed this.
All highly recommended.
